I bought one of those replacement speakers that is supposed to fit in the stock location under the dash. Well I have been under the dash looking in the area where the grill comes out at the top of the dash and I do not see anyplace to attach the speaker. What I am supposed to attach the speaker panel too. I just don't see anything.

Funky, that helped a lot. Now to figure something out as I didn't see any bracket off the top of the wiper motor area. I did like that picture with the angled bolt going into a hole. I will look to see if I have a hole up there as that would match the tap on the speaker base.
thanks, |

These are pictures of the two factory 4x10 speaker brackets used to mount the speaker under the dash. Left is a factory speaker bracket for 1960-63 GMC cabs which is offset for the rubber tab to sit on top of the ashtray housing. Right is the factory speaker bracket for 1964-66 cabs. The dash location of the ashtray, heater controls and such was changed between '63 and '64 necessitating the change in the bracket. You can likely fabricate one.
These bolt to the factory under dash bracket above the windshield wiper motor, cradle the speaker around the magnet while the other end wedges on top of the ashtray housing. You really cannot install the speaker and bracket with the radio already in the dash.

Thanks for the additional pictures Arthur. Not only does the radio have to come out, but the glove box and heater control. Only then can you see in there or even think of putting a speaker in that area.

I came up with a different mounting solution, one that insured it was against the bottom of the grill. I mounted 4 rare earth magnets on the wooden speaker panel, one in each corner. When I positioned it over the grill area it just slammed into place. Had to slide it a little toward the drivers side to clear the heater controls, but this thing is not going anywhere.
No radio yet, antenna in, speaker in, radio still has to be shipped. |
