Remember Earl Scheib?
 

My 1965 GMC has 3 colors currently; flame red (original), turquoise, and black.

I had seen the turquoise overspray before and noticed how quickly the paint flaked off.

I recently came across an ad from Earl Scheib. Wouldn't be surprised if it was his shop that painted the truck turquoise for just 29.95!

Seems very hastily done, lots of overspray everywhere and poor quality paint. I suppose you did not bring a car there for a show quality paint job...

I wonder if any of you that are old enough have some stories about him? He seems like quite the character.

Our town never had an Earl Scheib, but did have his competitor, MAACO. I had them paint my Datsun 2000 roadster, and it turned out pretty good! That was almost 30 years ago, so I don't remember how much it cost, except that it was cheap. Maybe that's why they closed down a few years later, from losing money.

Glad yours turned out well!

I've read really good and really bad stories about these quick turnaround spray booths; I guess there are quite a few factors at play whether the paintjob succeeds or fails.

As a senior in college in 1963, I had my white, somewhat battered, 1949 Dodge 1/2 ton painted Forest Green by Earl in Riverside California.
$29.95, no ups.
Masking tape work was pretty good and the transformation quite satisfying.
Don't know how it lasted, because I got drafted and had to sell it.

My dad had a friend that got his truck painted by Earl Sheib. Apparently you had to do all the prep work ahead of time (wash, degrease, etc) before dropping it off or you'd get a job like this:

He said a few months after the paint was done and baked on, they'd be driving down the highway and one of those spray lines on the hood would begin peeling off in long strips from the grill area, up and over to the top of the hood, then flap the windshield for a while. They'd take bets on how long it'd last before it peeled all the way up and blew off.

My dad remembers it being 99.95 in the later years, instead of 29.95.
"I'll paint enny car for NINNEYNINE NINNEYFIIIIVE!", he's fond of quoting any time I say I need to get Cecilia in paint.

Yeah I remember that guy. He had a couple of shops near me, some of my friends had their cars painted by Sheib. Yes, if you did your own body work and prep it would turn out O.K., particularly if you removed door handles, emblems, moldings, etc.. The paint they used was funny, it only came in a few colors and it never had much of a shine to it.

Yeah, I remember seeing Earl's ads on TV. Funny thing is that he always struck me as a bit of a shyster. I wouldn't have trusted him as far as I could see him.

Any car, any color! Except there weren't a lot of colors to choose from? He mentions in the ad that you could choose from 3000 different colors :teehee:
