Rims for original nub hubcaps 1963 1000
Kinda a newbie question, but I have one original chrome nub-style hubcap from my long-gone 1962 Suburban, and was curious about someday rounding out my collection with matching hubcaps should I find them for my '63. However, my '63 has modern replacement rims - will those hubcaps need OEM rims, and are they as hard to find as the hubcaps themselves?

62-63 Hub caps not hard to find and there are plenty of nub wheels. Wheels will not have to be "OEM" or exact 62-63 and can be Chevy unless you are a purest and want the exact width wheel, nub count and exact look...... But lug pattern, diameter and hubcap fit will be the same. Many GM nub wheel years will work. No one you will run into at a local car show will know a "GMC wheel" from a "Chevy wheel".
I don't know if your "modern wheels" are nubs. If they are, and the hub cap snaps on, get three more caps. |

I'm not THAT much of a purist, so Chevy works for me. I'm open to pointers on finding the correct hubcaps though; I'm following an Ebay auction for 2 right now. Are there other sources to recommend? The one I have is SS, I assume all the "shiny" ones are the same. I'll also posted a WANTED in the classifieds.

Re: Rims for original nub hubcaps 1963 1000
To me, SS is stainless steel. Don't trust some guy on Ebay. Our Jolly page says they are "Chrome/Stainless Steel". Never heard of that. You either have SS or Chrome. I don't think the hub caps were SS. I don't know of any SS hub caps. Painted steel, chrome plated steel, aluminum and plastic. SS would be real heavy and REAL expensive. Hard to stamp. So we need to change the info. The only pair of 62-63 GMC Chrome hub caps on Ebay right now are for 3/4-1 ton. Not for 1/2 T.

Ken, the one I have is non-magnetic and shiny; are you saying chromed aluminum then? Also, the pair I am following on Ebay matches the one I have in appearance and dimensions; seller describes them as a "1950's barn find" so perhaps just doesn't know.

1962-1963 GMC Hubcap Chrome/Stainless Steel Hubcap for J (1962) series 1000 trucks part #2414967 Chrome w/15x5K wheels and #2415318 Chrome w/all except 15x5K wheels. For 1500 & 2500 series trucks, use #2415719 Chrome. These part numbers should apply to G (1963) series trucks as well. So is it chrome or SS? Brad |
Re: Rims for original nub hubcaps 1963 1000
I'm not going to go out on a limb with your description of "shinny". So you tell me. What I know from the engineering world is you don't normally chrome aluminum or stainless steel for most applications. So if you post a picture of yours, maybe I can tell if it's polished aluminum or stainless. If I could lift it's weight or scratch the inside, I would know. Sometimes chrome will not hold a weak magnet. If the chrome is thick or the nickel is thin. Those are my thoughts. If it is SS, I will eat my MAGA hat.
