rear seal

Hey Guys Does anybody know if you can replace the rear engine seal without pulling the motor out of the truck?? Been pouring in stop leak but it doesn't work so good.

Yes, my mechanic just replaced the rear main seal in my 305E without removing the engine. He lowered the oil pan and slipped the new seal in place. He preferred to use the neoprene version instead of the original rope seal. I bought the neoprene seal at RockAuto for a just a few bucks.

I didn't pay for a new pan gasket so I would have to say that he used rtv or the old gasket or both. Don't know about the oil pickup tube. Mechanic didn't mention it.

I've read that "stop leak" products do not work on rope seals. I'm sure there are experts on this forum to confirm.
Also read that if your engine leaks while setting (clean off pan first) then it more then likely is the rear main seal.
Again, start with a clean pan and run or drive the car for a while. If it leaks during operation, it's probably pan gasket - I'm sure it could be both but one is a lot cheaper than the other.
