Original in-door speakers, '63 Custom Burb

Anyone see anything like this? I suspect it was dealer installed, like the AC was. I'm not sure how practical it was/is; although with modern sealing materials inside the door, I suppose it could work.

Back in the 1970s, I myself was guilty of defacing GMC doors by cutting holes for stereo speakers. Since car stereos weren't available until 1969 according to https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...-of-car-radios, it's highly unlikely a dealer would have installed your door speakers. Today I wouldn't dream of cutting a hole in a door like that.

For a quick "repair" you could cover the holes with lower door carpets like some of the aftermarket vendors sell. They make matching pieces for the kick panels too.

Interesting point Ed; the existing wires are connected to to the remains of the speakers, but not to the original AM radio. it hadn't occurred to me that a separate stereo would have been installed but that certainly makes sense.

Back then it was common to screw aftermarket stereos, tape players, and CB radios to the bottom edge of the dash. They came in so many different sizes and shapes that few of them fit in the original radio holes. That's also why you find some of our trucks with oversize holes cut in where the original radio was.

In pursuit of my wiper motor for rebuild, I removed the radio and trashed dash speaker. Any known numbers on a direct replacement, or a modern stereo-in-one in case I upgrade the radio innards?

I purchased one of their 4x10" speakers for a 68 Chevy van a few years ago and it had a great sound. You must use your original speaker bracket to mount it. I called them and they were very knowledgable and helpful as to which speaker to use, depending on the ohm requirements. Very reasonable price too.
