It turns out the switch was fine (the upside is I have a nice new dimmer switch that I can set aside for future use).
I've had a relay put in, as I'm told the issue had more to do with the fact that the switch couldn't handle the juice from the new headlights. That appears to have done the trick. Fingers crossed.
