The cable I have seems to be too long by at least a 12", Do we know if there was a standard length and what was the correct length?

Doubt if you will find that info unless someone measures an orig. As a suggestion, try to find pics of known original trucks or a vintage pic and see how it's routed. Then determine length to replicate the routing. Parts books have a part number but I have found that those numbers don't translate very often. The 1960 GMC Part No. is 2974154.
