So I think I figured it out - an A/C equipped truck would come with a wider 4 flu radiator and that was what was originally in my 66 Suburban - its been replaced with a aftermarket 3 flu so the top bracket and special A/C-only radiator hose retainer bracket are both wide and low fitting Chevrolet style because the 4 flu would have the low top tank.
I need to dig up an original 4 flu and have it re-cored if anyone knows where one is
