Won't stay running
 

I'm still trying to get the half ton '67 I bought recently to run properly. When I bought it, it had been sitting outdoors for several years without being started. The guy I bought it from had the original Stromberg rebuilt just before I bought it. The engine would run as long as you didn't push the gas pedal down more than about 1/3 of the way. I just finished replacing the fuel pump, the gas tank, and the pickup tube/sending unit assembly. The original tank had lots of crud in the bottom, and the filter sock on the end of the pickup tube was near fully clogged. I put 5 gallons of ethanol-free gas in the new tank.

Now when I start it, it will rev up then die within a few seconds. I can repeat this over and over, but it won't stay running no matter what I do with the choke or gas pedal. One clue may be that there's hardly any gas in the see-through filter near the carb. I'm suspecting the "new" fuel pump. It's a NAPA that I bought as a spare many years ago that's been sitting on the shelf since then.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I agree with TJ; have you tried blowing out the fuel hose?

Run it from a gas can with a hose down in can and attached other end to pump inlet. If it still does it, at least you have eliminated everything south of the pump. Which means it's the pump or carb. If does not do it, it's not pump or carb. Just use a regular gas can sitting on the ground. The pump will suck the gas just fine. No filter, new hose.
Once you get that info, you can isolate some more components or replace or test or repair. Report your findings if you need more ideas. Glad to try and help. Don't forget about gas tank venting.

Freshly rebuilt carb may be full of debris from the rest of the system being a mess?

Ed, this is Lewis Matkin. I have built dozens of ww Stromberg carbs over the years, and judging from all you have said, either the gas line from the tank to the f/pump is partially plugged or the high speed circuit in the carburator is plugged. Hope this is helpful in the solving of the problem.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. After blowing out the line from the new tank to the new fuel pump again, the engine stays running now. I drove it around the block with no problem stalling out. However, it does have a misfire. So now it's on to the plugs, plug wires, etc. I plan to install Pertronix too. It's a work in progress!
