Power Steering Conversion Kit Recommendation
After owning my 1965 GMC Suburban for almost 30 years now I have decided to go ahead with installing power steering --bad shoulders have really been the game changer. Truck has a 351M and has the proper pulleys along with an original Power Steering pump from a donor engine - I have an early 1970's 1/2 ton steering box withhoses ready for the install and now just need to purchase the mounting kit. I know there are different suppliers that have kits such as Rex and Captain Fab - but I would like to be pointed in the direction of the best choice by fellow GMC truck people. Also after the install did anyone notice a difference in the geometry in the steering linkage due to the steering box/arm being moved farther left of the frame due the mounting plate. From what I have read this caused a difference in left/right full turn ratios - that the proper way would be to cut/weld and graph a dimpled frame section from 1967 and later truck to the 65 frame. What are your thoughts? Thank you for your inputs. :goodjob:

Re: Power Steering Conversion Kit Recommendation
I used a CPP kit but I didn't know about CaptainFab or I would have used his unit. I too read about the geometry thing but haven't noticed it or paid much attention. I love having power steering on this truck. Seems like you have everything set to go so have at it and give your shoulder a break (bad choice of words, huh?)

Re: Power Steering Conversion Kit Recommendation
Has anybody used the Power Steering Conversion Kit from POL (PerforanceOnLine)? Cost is $160.00. I would like to get a kit that is recommended by GMC users who have used them - people has mentioned Captain Fab, Rez and CCP - what is your choice?
Thanks Again, Cliff |
Re: Power Steering Conversion Kit Recommendation
Heard nothing but good results from the people that have used Captain Fab's conversion kits. I have the original power assist on my 64, might convert to the power steering box style later on when I do the truck one day.

Re: Power Steering Conversion Kit Recommendation
Captain Fab is what I wound up using on my 65 Sub, am I am very pleased with how it integrates to our trucks. The install is simple, but more importantly is the geometry being correct.
I first tried CPP, and it was junk. Although I tried to modify it to work, it never made it any farther than the garbage can. |
Re: Power Steering Conversion Kit Recommendation
Thanks everyone for your input - I went with CaptainFab - John is a great guy to do business with!

I used Captn Fab's kit and recommend it highly.

Re: Power Steering Conversion Kit Recommendation
Hello to all,
can someone tell me the advantages of installing this system rather than finding an original system to install? Thank you, |
