Bell Housing Removal
Hey all,
I pulled my SM420 tranny and 305 this weekend. No problems whatsoever. I left the bell housing attached to the engine while pulling it. I am getting the new engine ready to install and need to pull the bell housing and flywheel off the old one and swap onto the new one. I also plan to install a new clutch assembly. There are 4 bolts holding the bell housing to the block, 2 on the outside and 2 on the bottom inside underneath the flywheel. Do I have to remove the clutch and flywheel prior to removing the bell housing? It doesn't seem there is enough clearance from the flywheel to remove the inside 2 bolts on the bell housing? I searched through my GMC maintenance manual but couldn't find this procedure. Thanks much, Ken |
Re: Bell Housing Removal
Yes, pull clutch/flywheel off first. Easier to do that with motor not on an engine stand... and of course you can't take bell housing off with motor on a engine stand anyway. Hang it on a cherry picker or on the floor/blocks/truck bed/kitchen table!:ok:

Re: Bell Housing Removal
Yes there you would have to remove the clutch and flywheel because you have six bolts under that flywheel that holds the bell housing on the motor. I found that out myself when I did a motor change on my '66 GMC a few years ago. Ross.Hodges Durham, NC.
