Dana 44 Capacity ?
Please tell me what the book says about filling rear end. Up to the hole or 1/2" below or ? I don't think the number of pints will help me. I can't measure that now. I filled to the hole but was wanting to be sure that's not too much. Front and rear. Thanks.

When I was in technical school, the rule of thumb was that if you could reach the oil level withthe tip of your little finger bent at the joint of the first knuckle, there was sufficient oil in the rear end. This goes for both front and rear axles. That being said, however, it was recommended that the oil level would be up to the oil fill hole, but there would be no danger of damaging the rear end with an oil level 1/2 inch below the oil fill hole. Hope this helps you out! |
Re: Dana 44 Capacity ?
Book says "To level of filler plug" and to use Special Powr-Lok differential lubricant if so equipped.

Re: Dana 44 Capacity ?
Thank you very much guys. I will fill to plug.

Re: Dana 44 Capacity ?
For anyone else looking here the capacity should be 1.3 quarts from a dry to full up. You can use regular gear oil but Jay Leno recommends using Red Line 75w90 GL-5 gear oil (prod number 57904) for our differentials. Supposed to preserve the parts better and slip smoother. (more smooth? smoothier?)

Re: Dana 44 Capacity ?
If I have a PowerLoc unit what else needs to be added? I heard there was an additive but I don't know what it should be.

Re: Dana 44 Capacity ?
Never mind I researched the section and came up with this;

On a thread on another forum, related to 4 wheel drives with a Spicer 44 posi lock pumpkin. They recommended going with the 90 wt with the additive for a limited slip plus adding a product called Equa-Torque, which is a friction modifier, made by Sta-Lube. Seems that works really good. |
Re: Dana 44 Capacity ?
The additive is a friction modifier, check at an auto parts store. It may be sold as a limited slip additive or supplement. When I ran a clutch pack limited slip in my Jeep I used Stay Lube Equa-Torque limited slip additive. When I worked at a GM dealership they too sold their own additive under part number 1052358 Lubricant additive, I'm sure by now that number has long been superseded.:ok:

Re: Dana 44 Capacity ?
Thanks Pete; I looked up that GM product on eBay and its pricey($40) from some of the listings I checked. The Equa Torque product is just under $10 at the parts store.

Re: Dana 44 Capacity ?
That high price was for vintage additive in the old NOS containers. They do have a corvette product that's competitively priced that is GM.
