After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Welps after 5 years sitting, I got Squash Blossom running today.
Had poor spark so new coil. Then rebuilt the Bendix Stromburg WW carb Then tried to start and solenoid burned up and melted the heavy positive end to battery. Replaced solenoid and she burned again, it was the starter. Got a new starter on Amazon (much better built and lugs longer too) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSVUWR4...roduct_details Starter info said 1966-1990 but contacted them and they said yes fits 1965 too. And it went in much easier than the old one! Started her and she fired right up! :) NOW I am having trouble finding a replacement muffler. Seems to be the engine size 305 V6 Anyone know of a fit? I'll check the numbers on the existing one that blew completely apart (gotta figure that out too) but last owner welded it on, so gonna get under there with the grinder! |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Oh and the exhaust pipe size is 2"
And a single exhaust muffler. The old muffler seems to have about a 2 and 1/4 to 2 and 1/2 in inlets/outlets |

Pretty much any muffler shop should be able to replace it for you. I bought a vintage one off Ebay myself. Fit like a glove.

Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Walker 21028 is the correct reproduction muffler
for the OEM exhaust. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...n,muffler,5872 |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Thanks guys!
I ordered the walker Quiet Flow 21028 and a 2" exhaust clamp since both exhaust and muffler in are 2" |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Okie dokie muffler in and working well!
Thought the backfiring was prob the distributor so after the "Where the heck is the dist hold down bolt" and THEN after the "oh need special bent wrench" ...used a cutoff 9/16 open end and went in from behind the dist, and ordered the proper wrench) I got her swinging and rough set it till the engine ran much better. Ran over to the gas station and filled her up. She starts right up but still backfires on accel. Can't get her up over 40 or so. So what is next? The carb is a Bendix Stromberg WW and I think the accelerator pump is sticking a bit in the well. http://syphan.phpwebhosting.com/pics/stromberg.jpg |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Could have sticky valves - warm the engine up and change oil and filter. A car/truck that has been setting idle for years will have a host of issues when put on the road again. I try to get my cars/trucks out at least twice a year (spring and fall) and if possible during the summer to keep the seals, brakes, and everything else loose and lubed.

Are you saying it backfire (explosion back through the carburetor) or afterfire explosion through the exhaust system. Some people don't know the different, I was just asking. If it is backfire and you didn't clean out the fuel system of the old gas before you started it. The intake valve could be sticking the the valve guide in the head. I would recommend doing a compression test. If you have a very low reading I would then do a leak down test on the low cylinder(s) to see where the leakage occurring. There is also a possibility of bent intake valve push rods. Pulling the valve covers and doing an inspection of the valve train. With the corresponding valve close the push rod should spin freely by hand. And while you are there check the valve clearances. If it is excessive you might have a bent push rod. By chance did you notice the smell of the fuel when when you had the carburetor apart? If it smell different than normal, then then fuel is might be causing the problem of sticking intake valves. This had happen to some of our members. If it is the intake valve sticking. You will need to dump the gas out of the tank and have it cleaned out as well as all of the fuel lines, fuel pump, and carburetor. And just maybe if you squirted some penetrating oil around the valve stems a few times and turn the engine over a few rev, it might unstick the valve(s). Otherwise the heads will have to be removed for repairs. |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
If you've lashed the valves to spec (.012" intake, .018" exhaust) my guess is that the accelerator pump membrane may stick. it is made of leather and doesn't like gas with ethanol in it (caused mine to stick)
Accelerating suddenly without the accelerator pump causes a sudden lean condition with could result in a backfire. Check if yours works by manually operating the accelerator pump and observe for gas squirting into the carb venturi. Do this when the engine is not running or you might loose some facial hair :D |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Hi guys! Well it's Oct 23 and she is just purring now! :)
I think the carb rebuild did a lot but when I turned the distributor it started to run sweetly and has stayed that way for a month on the road. I do need to replace the wiper motor and wanted some advice. I replaced it once and it got wet and shorted out. Is there a wiper motor that is less likely to short out OR do I have to creatively use some silicone to stop water or??? Any way to keep the motor safer? Thanks Roger |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Your wiper motor shouldn't care if it gets wet. Are there any exposed wires or anything?
|
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
OOoooo Fetch Me! I did not know that! So they should be completely insulated? Okay I will remove it and check for any exposed wires. Thanks :)

Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Is the seal between the wiper motor and the firewall still intact?
|
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Here's what your motor should look like.
https://newportwipers.com/wp-content...4122290436.jpg It seals around the motor shaft and the back of the motor, then the wires have little protectors on them too. Let us know what you find! |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
This is the kind that is installed now and shorted.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1 Is that the wrong one??? |

I hope this is right I just bought it. |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Well guys this wiper motor does not fit. I will return it. Here is a picture of the firewall wiper motor receptacle.
Do you know what the correct motor is that fits this? It's sort of a well the motor fits into, like a cup shape. My truck is a 1965 GMC 1000 with the 305 V6. Thanks Roger https://6066gmcclub.com/album.php?al...pictureid=4737 Okay I can't get the image up. Please look at it in my gallery, the pic is named: firewall wiper motor recepticle http://6066gmcclub.com/picture.php?a...pictureid=4737 |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Hi NewYorkSong,
I have fixed your picture link. You were only missing the domain portion at the front. With regard to your motor, do you think this model would be more likely to fit? https://www.ebay.com/itm/175946369561 -Jeannie 60-66 GMC Club |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Thank you very much Jeannie! :)
And the link you gave me is the one I have bought 2 of that failed because they are not sealed at all. So I guess more research! |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Does that one on Ebay you bought 2 of bolt up and fit? If it does, YOU might be the sealer!
It looks like it has open contacts on the back. Just plug it in, seal the plug up with silicone, and that should get you done. If you can't seal it with silicone, buy a 3.00 tube of dielectric grease and schmear it over the exposed contacts. Boom done. |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Thanks Pepsi
Ya was a sailor so I guess I can be a Sealer! Coming Tuesday gonna try it. :) |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Awesome! I'm going to keep an eye on this thread and see how it turned out. I will tell you to use a glove or rag if you use dielectric grease. You caint hardly wash that stuff off!
Good luck, sailor! |
Re: After 5 years sitting running again! NEED MUFFLER
Well with Pepsi's encouragement I did give the silicon seal a shot. Came out very well though I won't know for a bit how watertight it is. I also put a good size ring of it around the area that goes through the firewall. And on the outside.
You can see the contacts and the first on the left is the high-speed contact. The second from left after the gap is the ground or negative. The one on the right is Positive (it has two connection posts), but I only used one.https://6066gmcclub.com/album.php?al...pictureid=4738 Here it is siliconed https://6066gmcclub.com/album.php?al...pictureid=4739 And this is the specific silicon I used https://6066gmcclub.com/album.php?al...pictureid=4740 Welps put the domain in too but can't seem to get the **** pics to take??? You can look attem in my only album |
