Re: Rear main seal
I think he was just trying to make sure you knew about the weird "dip it in water" thing if you had that type of seal, which was the only seal you could find for a long time.
Bill, if you click the Youtube button on your post and paste the part of the link after the "V" in it then it'll show the video without clicking a link. |
Re: Rear main seal
THE RUBBER SEAL HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED. ALL YOU CAN GET IS A ROPE SEAL.I TRIED EVERY PARTS STORE I COULD THINK OF, ALL SUPERCEDED TO ROPE SEAL. I GOT LUCKY AND ORDERED A COMPLETE GASKET SET, THAT STILL HAD A RUBBER SEAL IN IT.:pullinghairout:

Re: Rear main seal
I found one on Ebay, verified it was a rubber one

Re: Rear main seal
I realize this is a year old but for obsolete gaskets and seals, call these people up they specialize in remanufacturing no longer found seals and all auto both domestic and foreign as well as tractors and vintage tractors. If you can get a neoprene seal in lieu of a rope seal, do it. I have worked on a few inline stovebolts and found it is a great way to abate rear main leaks.

Re: Rear main seal
just tried, olsens does not service gmc, no listings for any gmc.
bummer!!! |
Re: Rear main seal
If you didn't already pick up the phone and give them a yell. Tell them what you need and if they dont have it and find it obsolete, they will find a oem part and duplicate it. They need to hear from you.

Re: Rear main seal
Olson's have provided me with any seal I have ever needed for my GMC 351M - you just call them and explain to them what you need. Plus the gaskets I have purchased from them are of a better quality than the NOS sets you happen to have found on EBay - theirs are fresh and of a better choice of the type of gasket construction/material.

Re: Rear main seal
how are their prices?

Re: Rear main seal
I paid $45 for a neoprene rear main for a 235 stovebolt. Spendy but if installed correctly will not leak. When I was there last month they have some rope seals that they sell in bulk or build for their kits that are better designed material than what you get in Felpro kits for our big block 6s, not asbestos but with similar results. Give them a yell, they are gear heads first.
