New member - vin question
Hi YA'LL
I'm new to the club! whohoo! Thank you for having me. I have a 1965 step side and was triyng to find out more info on it by looking up the vin # . It has a plate above the drivers door whtch is the # on the title but i try to look it up and says no info, it is 12 numbers long. If this is not the vin where is it?and how in the **** could they regester it with this #? I'm not new to these trucks I use to own a 66 short fleet side back in the day but this is my first GMC. Please any help would be greatly appreciated! hope to hear from ya. Animal |
Re: New member - vin question
That small number plate on the drivers door frame is the VIN.

Re: New member - vin question
How about a pic or two? I'd like to see that plate. And the truck too! That way we can see what you see.

Re: New member - vin question
Aha! That's a chevy vin, not a GMC, that's my guess. You might have a chevy cab on it or someone lost the vin and just slapped a chevy vin from the junkyard on it. Either way that's not the original GMC vin. That's why it's not looking up.

Re: New member - vin question
It should have roset rivets too, some one used a Chevy tilte and vin on this truck is my guess. the vin number should be something like 1001ZF12345A or if it has an inline six I1001zf12345A.
That vin tag is from a 1963 Chevy, so the cab does not match the number. |
Re: New member - vin question
I'm curious is the instrument panel and dash the GMC type or Chevrolet?

Re: New member - vin question
Dont think anything's wrong with that Animal. Somoene just did what they felt like they had to to keep it on the road. 99.99% of people think Chevy and GMC is the same thing from the 1930s to 2015. Thats not even close to right until 1978 if i remember right, but people cant imagine them ever being different trucks.
You could live with it and no one but about 40% of us in the club (plus you) would know. Call it a GMC and treat her well. As long as she has a big block GMC V6 in her I'll back you to my deathbed  Or you can swap out the cab to a GMC. You'll need a engine hoist, a donor truck, and a buddy to help lift and settle it unless you're crazy like me. Then you gotta just say a prayer and start doin it, smashing toes and fingers with wild abandon. :lolsmack2: She's a good lookin truck either way. Congrats on her! |

Re: New member - vin question
The hood appears to be a Chevrolet hood as well.
Looks like the truck was made from parts... 64-66 Cab with a '63 VIN. Interesting. |

So the VIN tag number matches the title? Someone at DMV messed up then, the VIN is a 1963 yet you say the truck is a 1965? If the title calls it a 1965 and has the 1963 VIN.... wow... The VIN, as near as I can make out, starts with 3C144... so that indicates the VIN tag is from a 1963 2 wheel drive 1/2ton short bed pickup. The biggest problem you are going to have is parts. Since you won't know what year parts are on it, or whether they are GMC or Chevrolet (and there are differences). *If* you can, check the driver's side frame rail, between the motor mount and the radiator there *might* be a partial VIN stamped there (*might* if Chevrolet, probably not if GMC) |

Thanks Everyone for the input. here's some pics of the old girl. Like i said before I use to own a 66 Chevy short fleet side that I changed the cab and front clip with one from Oklahoma with no rust of course that's when I was living in Chicago so the old one was rusted.
Y'all seem like great guy's! Thanks again for all your help. Animal |
Re: New member - vin question
I believe it to be a GMC. It has leaf springs in the rear. it has also been changed to a built 350 and th350 trans. Think it still has the 6 cyl rear gear as I'm doing 3 and a half grand at around 55 mph need to jack it up and check the gear ratio..maybe some time soon I'll get to it.
It takes a good picture but it needs some love one of my favorite things i laugh about is it has a pinto floor shifter in it. LOL When i bought it you could not even shift it. had to drop the trans pan and tighten the shift link bolt and put the s clip back on. thats been 3 months and still works fine. she will churp 3rd not sure if the trans was built but it shifts hard. |
