NO VIN number plate
I have been looking for the vin number on my truck. Not on the door jams of either door, nothing in the engine compartment. How were they attached, a sticker or screwed onto the vehicle. Luckily I won't need an inspection as I have Nevada title, so it will transfer with no issue. But still............
Is it common for them to be lost? |
Re: NO VIN number plate
I know that 60-61 GMC's have the VIN as part of the nomenclature tag which is mounted next to the drivers side fresh air vent - check there. Not sure when GMC went to a separate VIN plate - wondering if it was 62 or 63 maybe? Anyway, try that big tag next to the vent and see if that's where its at

Re: NO VIN number plate
David,
Thanks for that link, gave me a lot of information. Well found small parts of plate around rivets where it should be, did find some holes on the inside driver kick panel by vent, those appears to be the GVW one, which is also missing. Guess searching the frame is the next step. Even though I don't need it to title it, it sure would be nice to have an idea where it was. thanks again, |
Re: NO VIN number plate
Well, my 1960 GMC Suburban has the VIN # on the plate inside the kickpanel - it did not come with a separate VIN plate because its on that other tag....maybe this is unique to 1960?

Ditto no marks on the frame. Cleaned off the drivers side frame in the engine compartment, no sign of any numbers.

Re: NO VIN number plate
This is my first post though I've been a member of this great forum for a good while. I became a GMC admirer about 35 years ago when my father-in- law bought a low mileage 63 with the 305 V6. He liked to tell people that it had pistons the size of coffee cans. Pretty close actually, depending upon the coffee can size.
To the point, I have a 61 which has the VIN on the nomenclature plate on the kick panel, but not on the forward area of the door frame. The two holes are there on the door frame, but no evidence of any plate ever being riveted or removed. Paint appears original there. I almost didn't buy the truck since I thought it should have the riveted on stainless VIN plate. I began observing pictures of other 60's and 61's and found several with the two holes drilled in the door frame but no plate there. Besides my 61, I found six or seven more right here in the photo album area of this forum, and two more on Craigslist. I have only observed this on 60 and 61 models, up to 1 ton. From my observation, it seems that the factory was not consistent with attaching the VIN plate to the door frame, even though 2 holes were drilled, at least on the first two years of production. I'm sure that many of you are aware of this. I just wanted to bring it up. Again, thanks for a great site and hats off to many talented and knowledgeable people! |

Re: NO VIN number plate
I hope no one is suggesting there is a plate on the inside of the driver's kick panel. Looks like it would be a real pain to remove.

Re: NO VIN number plate
One example of a 1961 with the VIN on the door frame can be seen on Page 4 of the picture albums on this site: AZTimT's 1961 2503
I don't know if it also has the VIN on the data plate on the driver's side kick panel, but I would assume it does. While browsing Ebay and Craigslist in the past I have seen other 1961 and possibly some 1960 GMC's with the VIN on the door frame. Apparently many or even most 60-61's lack the VIN at that location. All the 62's I have seen do have the door frame VIN. I think it would be interesting if other members would share their observations or knowledge. I'm certainly not drawing any conclusions. Again, thanks for a great forum with lots of helpful members! |
Re: NO VIN number plate
I was just looking at an album on a 61. Yes it had the vin plate on the inner kick panel. Nice example, but I believe they changed location in 62.
Mine has empty holes on the inner kick panel, bits of the vin plate hanging from the pop rivets on the A pillar and no number on the frame rail. Even looked under the seat for the build sheet, found pop tops from beer cans. |
Re: NO VIN number plate
Hello Jagarra, I hope you can get your VIN situation straightened out. Do the bits of remaining plate have any readable numbers, hopefully matching your title?
|
Re: NO VIN number plate
No, not much of anything, just enough to show there was something there, just fragments.
I contacted the PO, which is a friend of mine, he had no knowledge of the vin plate issue. He got it and it sat for 6 years. He however, is contacting the fella he got it from, who may have had since new. So at least we have some type of traceable path in my area. The original owner had 2 of these trucks, one has been kept in a garage and hardly ever used. Mine was used around the property for general work, hauling and trash runs. |

here's what my 1960 GMC pickup has for a VIN plate - it is affixed to the drivers kick panel next to the fresh air vent.

Re: NO VIN number plate
Jagarra,
It may not be as satisfying or useful, but does Nevada (or other state that the truck came from) put the VIN number on registration documents? California puts it on the annual registration form. If so, you might be able to come up with the number from a previous owner who still has this paperwork. JRMunn |
Re: NO VIN number plate
I know the vin number, have the title. But this is more of an exercise in determining where it should be located and how does one get a replacement vin tag.
I have contacted one outfit, no response yet. I will contact Jim Carter, found on previous forums threads that he can supply replacement vin plates. The issue is if a vehicle is titled from out of state, a vin inspection is required, even though in this case it is not an issue, it brings up an interesting set of problems. A few years ago I bought a motorcycle from a fellow I knew, he said he had the title, but could not find it, he never transferred it into his name. Not having a title gives you some real headaches. To make a long story short, it was previously registered and titled in California. I downloaded the necessary paperwork to get a replacement title. We went back to the original owner who last had the bike registered and got him to sign off, notarized of course. Submitted the paperwork to CA DMV with proper paperwork and was told we had to pay registration fees for the last 10 years that had elapsed from the last registration. This was to the tune of $750 before they would issue a duplicate title. To my benefit, the guy I bought it from found the title and I was able to get it registered here in Nevada, some 19 months after I bought the bike. A point to remember as one sees these old trucks out behind a house somewhere. Know the requirements of your DMV before you commit on buying a great restoration project without a title. |
Re: NO VIN number plate
This link was posted by another member here (Slorio?) on another forum. Although not a true by-the-bolts restoration, it's a beautiful truck. It's listed as a 1961 and shows the VIN plate on the door and a detailed photo as well. The kick panel plate is covered by a utility trash bag but maybe it's still there.
http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/...0/1696534.html I too had heard that some trucks had the VIN stamped on top of the frame rail, just below the driver-side cab area. I heard this applied to Chevy trucks only and not on GMC's. My 1970 GMC did not have a partial VIN stamping by the power steering box frame area. |
Re: NO VIN number plate
Neither does my 68!

Re: NO VIN number plate
Here is the company that I used ten years ago to reproduce a missing body number plate for my '51 Henry J. They did a great job. The tag was EXACTLY like it would have looked on a brand new car. Good luck.

Re: NO VIN number plate
Thanks, I did send that company an e-mail asking them what they needed to make the replacement vin, no response.
Nice Henry J, I have a 52 Willys Aero Ace coupe, belonged to my grandfather, who bought it new. |
