New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
Hello Everyone -
Very cool site...! I recently purchased a 1964 GMC K1502 3/4 ton factory 4WD with the original 305 V6. I sure love the truck... I bought it site unseen... spare a few craigslist pictures... flew from CA to Seattle and drove it home! Not only did this truck make it home, but I stopped in Washougal, WA and picked up a spare 1966 3/4 2wd and rented a trailer and hauled them home 850 miles! The 4WD has a fair amount of rust... initial plan was to use the red sheetmetal from the 2wd... Hate to mess up two original trucks... both run great and have the 305 V6. Kinda toying with the idea of finding a super nice '64 4WD to buy.... I know they are scarce... Here's a pic stopping for a radiator check near Siskiyou summit in Oregon. Welcome Vintage4WD! :welcome:
Great shot of the two trucks and quite the adventure it sounds like. Kudos for your efforts. |
Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
nice post some more pics of the k 1500 when you get a chance

Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
Looks like some good trucks, you can buy most all the sheet metal aftermarket, so you won't have to strip a nice truck down, or just find a nice chevy to get the parts you need, lot more of those around than GMCs, and also most of the bigger truck share a lot of the sheet metal.
Nice shot of the Two GMCs on Siskiyou Summit. |

Gets some pics posted of the front end of that 64, it appears like may have the rarer factory grille guard that was actually designed for 62-66 trucks.

Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
Thanks for the welcome!... I know patch panels are available... but my 4WD cab has rust all the way around the windshield! (****!)
I'd really like to keep the orig cab... any ideas from members on fixing the windshield opening??? Likely it can be done - but it's gonna be expensive... I'll post more pics soon... |
Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
Yes... good eye bigblock
It does have the front grill guard which has a bronze-colored metal GMC tag riveted to the guard... pretty cool |
Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
My fathers 62 K1000 had the factory grille guard, I do remember it had a tag on it. The dealer installed it back in 1964 but it was the 60-61 style guard evidently there must have been a surplus, it hung over the hood too high. My 68 also has the factory grille guard but no tag just numbers stamped on it.

soooo jealous....these look like fun to me. I want to see a picture of that cool grill guard and the tag if you can get a close up - for my option and accessory picture archives

Good for you. Those are some nice finds. Been looking for one just like your two wheel drive for a wail myself with no luck a all. Ross '66 GMC with '12 flat bed.

I've been watching for a 4X4 gmc, a friend of mine has a short step side 4X4 '65 GMC, it's awesome!

Does anybody know why I can't even see one someone else has bought? are the short bed 4x4's just plain gobbled up by hoarders or nonexistent? |
Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
My old neighbor has a short bed step side factory 4x4. I want a short bed to build into my daily driver and a long bed for a work truck, I don't like long beds that much, but it can fit a full sheet of plywood and I might be able to get away with not having a job site trailer if it all fits in my work truck.

Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
Thanks everyone for the comments! I'm really loving my '64 4WD!
I will post some more pictures this weekend. I have also recently "discovered" that GMC made a 2.5-3 ton factory 4x4... model KV4000... if anyone has any information or knows of one for sale, please let me know. |
Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
GMCNUT...
There was a 1965 GMC SWB 4x4 on ebay last week... owner claimed it was rare... likely many of the 1960-66 4x4s were built more for utility, therefore most were LWB. http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/d...ps9ea22525.jpg |
Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
I was just talking to the guy that bought that truck! I don't recall it being a SWB though. Still looks great.

Nice picture!!! The towing vehicle is a Shortbed? Both appear to be nice looking vehicles!

Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
there was no factory 4bys above 3/4 tons, 1 ton and above were napco conversions done at dealerships or some other source

In this thread below, Funky61 links to another thread from the udder forum which has detailed specs on the 2-ton+ 4 wheel drives. Possibly GMC contracted NAPCO to build them, but the brochures and specs appear to show them as factory vehicles. http://6066gmcclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48587 |
Re: New Member with a 1964 K1502 factory 4WD
im not saying they were not 4bys , just not done at factory, dealerships or some other source napco, and coleman were products used to transform them into 4 wheel drive
