Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
Fetch - have you used one of these kits? Curious if anyone has had an issue replacing the 11 inch clutch with the 12 inch kit.
RockAuto has them also for $144 --- AMS AUTOMOTIVE 04528 12.000" X 1.125" X 10T EDIT: Just checked your Advance Auto link. Here in north Alabama, they have it for $118! |

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
fellas, you have to be careful with these "will-fit" cluches! Our GMC engines take a clutch disc that is completely flat on the flywheel side of the disc--no protrusion of the damper hub into the flywheel at all. If these "will-fit" kits are made with a flat disc on the flywheel side--GREAT!!!! If not, they are using the "chevrolet will work" mentality I have come across over the last 25 some odd years. No part of a chevy will fit on GMC V6 specific parts, unfornuately.

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
Lewis I experieced the exact situation you are speaking about, luckily I caught it before putting the clutch together, my parts guy send my clutch and pressure plate to a shop and they rebuilt my old cores and they did a excellent
job for a little under $150. |
Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
Quick question: I saw one of these clutch kits the other day, and it looks like it 'might' work. While the disk hub is offset to the rear, away from the flywheel, the hub and springs slightly protrude on the flywheel side. Certainly a lot less than the universal 'Chevy' clutches I have seen in which the hub is centered in the disk. I know going from an 11" to a 12" should not pose any issues.
The clutch I was looking at was a AMS Rhinopac 04-528. Their catalog does show this number as fitting many GMC V-6's. Has anyone around here actually used one of these new clutches? |

Yep, the Rhinopac should work too. Open the package before you buy it if you can to make sure the alignment tool is still in there. They fall out pretty easy. Also on the Rhinopac they have a throwout bearing that has a zerk (sp) fitting on it that you shoot full of grease every once in a while to maintain it. |

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
I got one of these from Advance Auto: Precision Clutch MU1862-1. It does not fit. Not even close. The hub and spring plate stick out way to far and does not lay flat on the flywheel. Also, the pilot bearing is way too small. Going to take it back and compare to another. Maybe I got a lemon.

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
KC would you post a photo of it before you return it; both sides.

Thanks! The 1st pic shows the new and old disc with the "flywheel" side up (both are stamped with flywheel side) The 2nd pic shows both with the "pressure plate" side up. And the 3rd shows the difference in pilot bearings. Something is not right.

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
So the Rhinopac does not have this problem, but the advance auto Precision unit does?
I got my original renanufactured at Hite Parts Exchange here in Columbus, OH, but I certainly wouldn't mind having a spare of everything on hand. Especially if I am pulling the Saginaw 4sp in favor of a Jeep Aisin AX15 5 sp OD + Novak Adapter plate this season. |
Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
The Advance Auto Precision Clutch MU1862-1 was not the right clutch kit, even though this is the part # that comes up online AND at the store. I bought the Rhinopac/AMS/New Generation 04-528 Clutch Kit, and it seems to be the right one for the Muncie SM-420. I haven't installed it yet.

That's for checking back in and photos of the lemon disc.

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
Kchampagne,
Did the rhinopac come with the rightpilot bearing and have the very low shaft flange on the flywheel side? I just removed the clutch on my 305e/sm420 and it looks like flange had been modified by the last guy to sit upsnug to the fly wheel like it should. I spent an hour looking at clutches at the Carquest counter, all of them had the tall flange. The guy is ordering another that will be in tomorrow. He said the Rhinopac number is listed as the "new" number mu1862-1 and they should be the same. (Fwiw my clutch problem is on the pressure plate side, one of the bolts that holds spring tension on the fingers broke. The friction disc is worn and needs replaced or rebuilt, but I really need the whole pressure plate side too) |
Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
Hey Surfamtn,
I just realized you are in Boulder. I'm in Littleton. I haven't installed my kit yet, but it lays flats on the flywheel and everything lines up. Avoid the Advance Auto ones. The MU1862-1 is nowhere near the same as the Rhinopac 04-528. Here are 2 links I had bookmarked for the 04-528. I bought mine from Rockauto even though I try to avoid them. https://www.amazon.com/New-Generatio...528+Clutch+Kit http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....524018&jsn=233 |
Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
I am having a problem finding a clutch kit for my 1964 GMC V6 305E. I have the friction disc plate just like the one in your photo with the flywheel side that is flush on center hole and springs barely protrude. I have tried the rhino pac 04-528 and one from O'reillys and Napa. I cannot find one that is flush which will allow friction plate to side on flywheel. Any suggestions. Thanks

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
Quote:
You have to use the bigger pressure plate that comes with the Rhino Pak, not re-use your old pressure plate. But then the 04-528 should work perfectly. |
Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
The new pressure plate will work but the friction disc will not work. It does not sit on flywheel flat because the center spline extends out too far when it needs to be flush.
|
Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
This sounds like the problem I originally had. Ended up using a new pressure plate but having my disc re-lined. I thought the Rhino-pac disc had enough clearance.
|
Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
The Rhino-Pac should work, but you need to use the complete kit. Your original clutch disc is 11" and the new one is 12" I am not aware of a new kit that is 11".

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
Hi guys, now going through the same crap you all had to go through. Needing to order a new clutch kit for my 64 GMC. It has a 67 305E and SM420. This kit looks Exactly the same as what came out. Has anyone used it? There seemed to be so many yes's and no's I am now confused. haha If yes I am getting this one on the way as I wanna be back on the road. http://www.amsautomotive.com/AMS/Tem...8&KITID=04-528

That looks right. I think the big deal is to make sure it has 04-528 in the name and you're good. On mine the throw out bearing (looks like a drinking chalice kinda thing) was HUGE compared to my old one, and it had a grease fitting. But it fit and worked great. |

That's a pain...TJ, would you post a pic of what you received? It's strange how some mentioned it works and others (yourself now included) say naught.

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
I am wondering is the V-6 flywheels changed at some point. When I replaced the clutch on my '67 351E, I could not find a new disc that would work. None of the ones I looked at would sit flush on the flywheel. The original clutch disc was absolutely flat on the flywheel side, nothing protruded. At the time, I did NOT look at a Rhinopac 04-528. My solution was to send the original disc out and have it re-lined. Since there are those on this forum that have used the 04-528, I have no other explanation. There must be different flywheels.

I have had one of every year (1960-1968) and every one I have pulled apart had what looked to be the same flywheel assembly. A flat flywheel with a recess just deep enough for the bolts. Clutch discs were all flat on one side with the spring pack and nose on the other side. This for 305s and 351s. Looking at a picture of the Rhinopac 04-528 https://images.whisystems.com/Smartp...AMS/04-528.jpg It looks to me like there could possibly be a nose piece on the reverse side of this disc, which means it won't fit (the reverse side should be the flywheel side). If the spring pack sticks out at all it should rub on the bolts. I think someone else had the nose pressed out and then pressed back in on the other side to make their assembly work (I think I read that here). I've smashed fingers and dropped parts on my toes enough to where I can't say I have ever seen a difference between flywheels. |
Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
The flywheels on the V6 never changed and like David brought up if someone had the nose on the clutch pressed out and turned over to the other side that would work. I can verify that would work because that's what ended up happening to the clutch I bought for my 68 years ago. I was told it would fit the V6 application but it didn't so gave the parts store my old clutch disc and the new one to compare to by the next day everything was right, evidently their supplier sent the disc to a local clutch remanufacturer and they reversed it:thumbsup:

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
For someone smarter than me, this picture album just showed on the main page. I looked at it, but I'm not sure what they're trying to show. We can swap out for a centerforce clutch model maybe?

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
I have the 64 305E and the Rhino pac did not work for mine. I tried a couple other ones from O'reilly and Napa and they did not work. As someone stated in a previous post the one side is flat. I sent mine to Brake & Clutch Supply 254-752-4307 in Waco, Texas. The guys were very nice and did a great job. Turn around was great.

Re: Get a brand new clutch for your 305 V6 for 155.00
Isn't it ironic that we have all these pictures posted of these new clutch discs that supposedly work, but NONE of the pictures show the flywheel side! There is a picture of the correct used disc. Looks to me that the Centerforce disc is the plain old Chevy style, no way it will work.

I have a 351E with the NP-435, is the clutch the same as the SM420?
